Rock Chick Glamour (The Daily Telegraph)

What makes a modern rock princess shine? Sexy, glossy hair, gleaming skin, gorgeous make-up and plenty of attitude. Here, some of her best-kept beauty secrets ...

Perfect your pout: slicked with nude gloss or painted rock chick crimson, it’s all about luscious-looking lips. Parisienne rock princess Vanessa Paradis puckers up with Make Up For Ever’s Lipstick Palette (£18), available in 18 great colourways (at 51 South Molton Street, London W1, and by mail order, tel: 0207- 529 5691).

‘Experiment with different textures - sheerer formulas and glosses make stronger colours like red easier to wear,’ says Make Up For Ever founder Dany Sanz.

MAC’s tinted Lip Glasses (£8.50 each) - worn by Patsy Kensit and Saffron of Republica - are another hot favourite, in shades such as Russian Red and new C-Thru - a gorgeous pinky-beige (for stockists, tel: 0207- 534 9222).

Nail it: chipped polish is a definite no-no. Act like a true rock princess and have your manicurist come to you: Kylie Minogue, Mels C and B, Cerys Matthews and Elizabeth Jagger have all called on Nails Inc.’s mobile London manicurists (£50 per person, or £9 each for party of 5, tel: 0207- 499 8333). Colour-wise, think bold: Nicole Appleton wears Nails Inc.’s Nail Polish (£8.50) in Greek Street, a bubblegum pink; while Jade Jagger loves Ruby & Millie’s Nail Colour (£8) in Orange 300C on her toes (at Boots).

It’s in the bag: everything you need to give your hair a funky rock chick feel comes in the form of John Frieda’s Hot Hollywood Hair Kit (£5) in Glam Rock. Put together by Sally Hershberger - LA-based hair stylist to the likes of Courtney Love and Sheryl Crowe - choose from the Sheer Blonde, readytowear or Frizz-Ease versions, depending on your hair type (at Boots and Top Shop).

A is for Alchemy: the in-house beauty range from cult New York apothecary C.O. Bigelow, rumoured to be coming to London later this year. Kylie Minogue loves the line and Debbie Harry and Liv Tyler get glowing with the Natural Finish Luminising Foundation (£19). Check out, too, the new Complexion Gels (£12 each) which give cheeks the prettiest flush of colour (for UK stockists and mail order, tel: 01785- 812098).

The eyes have it: smoky eyeliner is a rock princess staple. Make-up artist Laura Mercier, who has worked with Madonna for years, likes to smudge pencil onto the back of her hand before applying it with a brush in short, vertical strokes. ‘The trick is to get the colour right inbetween the lashes,’ explains Mercier. Try Laura Mercier’s Eye Pencil (£12.50) in Black Extreme or Special Brown, or Origins’ new Eye Pencil (£8.50) in Jet or Smoke.

Show some skin: before you brave this summer’s revealing skirts and dresses, give skin an alluring sheen or subtle sparkle. ‘To look fabulously glamorous, apply body make-up with shimmer,’ suggests make-up artist Vincent Longo, whose New Age Body Collection (£28) comprises a Diva Dust powder and Body Divine cream, in Bronze, Gold or Silver. Jennifer Lopez, Kylie Minogue and Christina Aguilera have all used it (for stockists, tel: 01252- 741601). Stella McCartney smoothes on BeneFit’s Lightning (£16), a body lotion with gold flecks (for stockists, tel: 0901- 1130001).

Making faces: from ultra-hip Californian make-up company Poole Cosmetics, the Addicted To Love kit lets you recreate the red lips and smoky eyes sported by the girls in Robert Palmer’s Eighties video (from Harvey Nichols, Knightsbridge, later this spring).

Get wave reviews: ‘What’s sexy now is enhancing your hair’s natural movement,’ says hairdresser Errol Douglas, who tends to the tresses of the All Saints girls at his Belgravia salon (for appointments, tel: 0207- 235 0110). ‘Drying naturally curly hair with a diffuser will make the curls defined rather than fluffy - but don’t brush it afterwards.’

Saving face: rock princesses like Jennifer Lopez get their golden girl looks straight from a bottle. ‘I like to have a little colour ... the thing that people don’t know is that self-tanner is just not that hard to use,’ Lopez recently told Allure magazine (she’s also said to use BeneFit’s Glamazon, £22, a brush-on liquid bronzer).

Meanwhile, Victoria Beckham, Cat Deeley, Billie Piper and Patsy Kensit all make time for St Tropez self-tanning treatments. Try the Starter Kit (£9.99, inquiries, tel: 0115- 922 1462).

Not-so-heavy metals: sultry metallic shadows provide an alternative to smoky eyes. Jennifer Lopez has worn Make Up For Ever’s Eyeshadow (£9) in Silver; or you could get creative with Chanel’s Aqualumières (£24), a new palette of cream-to-powder shadows which can be used wet or dry. A limited edition, it includes a gorgeously deep gold, so catch it while you can ...

Pack it on: during the shooting of Destiny’s Child’s Independent Women Part I video, Joico’s K-Pak Reconstructor (£ 8.95) kept the trio’s hair in tip-top condition (for stockists and mail order, tel: 01282- 683100). Billie Piper, meanwhile, slathers on Over The Top’s Instant Feedback (£15, by mail order, tel: 0207- 229 0563, or at www.HQhair.com).

Get this: American make-up artist Bobbi Brown has been road-testing her spring/summer colours on new Stateside all-girl bands Dream and Blaque. Check out the fabulous ColorOptions Opalgloss (£13), which adds a neutral pearly sheen to bare lips or another colour (for stockists, tel: 0800- 525501).

Keep your colour: between salon visits, rock princesses prevent their tinted tresses from fading fast with products formulated for coloured hair. Try Jo Hansford’s Protect & Shine Shampoo and Nourish & Polish Conditioner (£3.99 each at Boots), from the colourist to the likes of Donna Air and Gail Porter.

She’s gotta have it: New York fashion designer Anna Sui’s make-up range is a hit with rock chicks - Shirley Manson, Courtney Love, Gwen Stefani, Cher and Stevie Nicks, to name a few. The Eye Gloss (£10) is ever-popular, but look out for the groovy new Lipstick Ring - it flips up to reveal a tiny palette of colour - coming this spring (for stockists, tel: 0207- 499 4420).

Make a clean sweep: virtuous rock princesses always take their make-up off at night. Shavata Singh, senior beauty therapist at the Michaeljohn salon in Mayfair, recommends products by Sisley and Gatineau to clients like Natalie Imbruglia, Cher and Lulu (for appointments, tel: 0207- 629 6969). Singh particularly likes Sisley’s Buff and Wash (£44) - ‘the gel is hydrating, whilst the small granules gently slough off dead cells,’ - and Gatineau’s Refreshing Wake-Up Toner (£15).

Put on the glitz: a little glitter goes a long way. Liv Tyler wears Hard Candy’s Super Shine Lip Gloss (£9.95) - Oxygen is an opalescent glitter gloss - while Mary J Blige and Janet Jackson opt for the Sonic Glitter Shadow Pencil (£13.95). It comes in 6 new shades for spring, including Girlie, an aqua green, and Hick, a sparkly lavender.

Day trippers: rock princesses squeeze a spot of pampering into their schedules whenever possible. Make a beeline for the new Elemis Day Spa in Mayfair, which offers temptingly exotic treatments (inquiries, tel: 0207- 499 4995). You might bump into Victoria Beckham in the Thai, Balinese or Moroccan suites - she’s a big fan of Elemis products, especially the Lime Blossom Cleanser (£20).

Get naked: the new face of spring is nude and glossy. Take a tip from Michaeljohn make-up artist Karen Alder - who gets Kylie Minogue ready for her close-ups - and try Stila’s creamy Convertible Color (£23) on cheeks and eyes: ‘Keep powder to a minimum, only on the “T-zone”,’ says Alder, who also swears by Tweezerman’s Brow Mousse (£7) and Elizabeth Arden’s Crystal Clear Lip Gloss (£11).

Refresh yourself: no jet-setting rock princess would be without her travel-size facial spritzer, to tone and hydrate pores parched by cabin air. Madonna packs Caudelie’s Eau de Beauté (£9.35) in her carry-on (for stockists, tel: 0870- 2412163).

Behind the shades: a pair of big dark sunglasses will go a long way, but when late nights have taken their toll, Estée Lauder’s Stress Relief Eye Masks (£19.50 for 10) come to the rescue. Super-soothing, and infinitely more glam than a couple of soggy old teabags ...
